FIFTH KING OF BHUTAN
Fifth King of Bhutan His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, was born on 21 February 1980 to His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck.
His Majesty’s education was in schools within the country followed by high school and university in the USA and the UK. His Majesty also attended the 2005 program of the National Defence College in New Delhi, India. Furthermore, His Majesty has received Honorary Doctorates from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, Rangsit University, Thailand, Calcutta University, India, and most recently from Keio University, Japan.
On 9 December 2006, His Majesty Fourth King issued a Royal Edict announcing his abdication, and transferred the throne to His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who was officially crowned on 6 November 2008 as Fifth King of Bhutan.
On 20 May 2011, the His Majesty announced his engagement to Azhi Jetsun Pema. They Royal Couple were married on 13 October 2011 in Punakha Dzong. During the ceremony the King received the Crown of the Druk Gyal-tsuen (Queen) from the most sacred Machhen temple of the Dzong and bestowed it on Her Majesty Jetsun Pema, hereby formally proclaiming her the Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
On 11 November 2015, His Majesty announced expecting of Gyalsay (son), early in 2016. Prince Jigme Namgyal Wangchuck was born in Lingkana Palace in Thimphu, on 5 February 2016.
On 17 December 2019, His Majesty announced expecting of second child, to be born in spring 2020. Prince was born on 19 March 2020 in Lingkana Palace in Thimphu.
